and to answer the original question: a hiccup is a sudden contraction of the muscles in your throat, which even the brightest scientists have failed to find a reason for. I guess I hid the answer pretty well in the first post.

The brightest scientists were looking in the wrong place, then. If you've got a diaphragm in your throat, you've done something wrong.
