The first game of the season was Cougars vs. Dawgs and a most people expected the Dawgs to win this one 42-28. Mosca contributed quite a bit for the Dawgs with 144 yards on 8.4 YPC and two TDs but that was only about half of what his opposing RB Joshua Wise did. Wise was the Offensive player of the game with 345 yards, 4 TDs, and 12.3 YPC. Gino Debomb had a good day on his debut as far as yards go with 257 and he had two TDs to go with that but 3 interceptions and was only 7/22 passing.
On the defensive side of the ball Ray Lewis and Mickey Landrum were the stars. Ray Lewis 7 tackles to lead the Cougars. Landrum and Kamau Jackson had good debuts. Landrum had 8 tackles, 4 pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. Kamau Jackson had 5 tackles and a sack to go along with that. Landrum was the 11th overall pick (5th in the second round) and Kamau Jackson was the 13th pick (1st pick of the third round). Jackson and Landrum weren't extremely highly picked but they also weren't very lowly picked either. Josh Wise was the POG and he was the 24th pick (last pick of the 4th round) and Tristan Jenkins who had 8 tackles was the 26th pick (2nd pick of the 5th round).
I'm gonna guess that Landrum will continue to be a good player and probably Jackson but I think it would be wise to not hype up Josh Wise and Tristan Jenkins too much because they may have benefited a lot from playing a fairly easy team.
This game the Surge were definately expected to win but not in near the dominate fashion. The Falcons fought hard at the start but eventually they just couldn't keep it up. The Surge won 64-17. The Surge nearly doubled the Falcons yards of total offense. Vick was the POG with 274 yards and 6 TDs (5 rushing and one returnt). Lipton was very efficient with 252 yards and 2 TDs.
The pre-season front runners for the ROY Deron Lucas and Brad Steeves played in this game. Steeves had a strong outing with 150 yards and 2 TDs. Lucas did well with 252 yards and 2 TDs but had 2 interceptions and completed only 35% of his passes.
The Falcon secondary players were able to get 21 tackles, unfortunately for the Falcons that was because they were getting past the linebackers who only combined for 10 tackles.
Ty Summers had a dissapointing debut for the Surge with just one tackle and one pass deflection. Summers was traded in a deal earlier this week that sent Zach Csonka to the Falcons. Csonka only recorded two tackles but also had a sack.
The final game of the week was the most anticipated and it dissapointed nobody...except Sharks fans as the Thunder pulled it out to win 27-24. The Thunder and the Sharks were the two finals teams last year. The Thunder have now won 5 games in a row against the Sharks. The Sharks arguably had the better game with a 302 to 189 yard advantage but turnovers in key situations caused the Sharks to lose their opener.
The Sharks held Garcia to 85 yards on 3.5 ypc and Flutie to 86 yards on 38 percent but they didn't have their usual offensive day either. Manning had 221 yards and 3 TDs but 2 interceptions and 1 fumble. Boomer Sooner had only 3 catches for 31 yards and a crucial fumble that cost them the game. As the team captains Sooner and Manning took full responsibility for the loss. Boomer Sooner was quoted saying "there has been times against the Thunder where I've done everything I can against the Thunder and we just didn't win because the Thunder have a great team and can put up a lot of points, but this was one of those games where our defense played well and they really deserved to win, I just didn't play a good game, I should've done more for them but we will get over it and hit the practice fields hard and prepare for the Dawgs."
On the defensive side of the ball Kris Johnson was the player of the game. He held Sooner to a low amount of yards and had 6 tackles to go along with an interception, 3 pass deflections and a forced fumble. Van Whyje also had a good game with 7 tackles and an interception.
And now for our top 5 canidates for ROY and POY-
ROY
Honorable mention- Jarret Mond, Deuce Fitzgerald, Rashaun Salaam, and Vince Mosca
5. Kamau Jackson had 5 tackles and 1 sack last week against the Dawgs. This kid could really be good and lead the league in sacks.
4. Deron Lucas had a day below what was expected with 256 yards, two TDs, but two interceptions and completed only 35% of his passes but I expect him to rebound and I think Reggie Williams will start to help him out more.
3. Mickey Landrum was one of the few bright spots on the Dawgs last game. He had 8 tackles, 4 pass deflections, and a fumble recovery.
2. Josh Wise- its hard to put somebody that had 345 yards and 4 TDs at second but if you put it in perspective he was playing arguably the worst run defense in the league. He will have to prove to us a little more before he becomes #1. But 345 yards is something that I'm not sure even the top RBs like Vick or Garcia could do
1. Brad Steeves- Brad Steeves had 4 rec. for a 150 yards. Yeah, I know that Wise had a better game this week but I think Steeves will be able to contribute more week in and week out.
POY Canidates-
5. Ray Lewis lead his young team to its first victory. He had a team high 7 tackles and a sack to go along with it. Lewis is a very strong canidate to repeat as DPOY.
4. Brad Steeves is the only rookie to make this list. He was expected to be slightly behind Williams and Sooner in the preseason but when he had nearly 5 times as many yards as both of them combined that put him ahead of them. Reggie and Boomer are definatley capable to take this spot back quick. Steeves had 150 yards and 2 TDs.
3. David Manning had a sub par day last week and that dropped him below Lipton. Manning did have to play the Thunder and he didn't get near as much help from Sooner as Lipton did from Steeves. He just might jump back ahead of Lipton because he will have the Dawgs and Lipton will have the Thunder.
2. Ryan Lipton was the only quarterback that was able to not only have good yards and get a pair of TDs, but to also complete 50% of his passes and not throw any interceptions.
1. Ladainian Vick was the player of the week last week as he had 274 yards rushing and had 6 TDs. That is two really good weeks for any back all in one game and some backs would be happy to have that as their three week total. Note to all running backs except Josh Wise- good luck catching him. Note to Josh Wise- good luck staying ahead of him for another week.
On the defensive side of the ball Ray Lewis and Mickey Landrum were the stars. Ray Lewis 7 tackles to lead the Cougars. Landrum and Kamau Jackson had good debuts.
